The National Portrait Gallery has added the Salford Lads image to their collection.

The photo selected by Morrissey for ‘The Queen Is Dead’ sleeve, of The Smiths standing outside Salford Lads Club (now a Mecca for Smiths fans from all over the globe) is to many the defining image of a band at their peak; beautifully composed, intelligent and iconic.

Its now over 20 years since the Queen is dead was released and since then various photos have been used widely in magazines , books and albums sleeves.

Stephen Wright was living in the salubrious Manchester suburb of Longsight when the call came to photograph the most important and influential band of the 1980’s, The Smiths.
